Holiday Party Entertainment Tips

Magic as holiday party entertainment really just works. Magic brings people out of their shells (even in front of the CEO), and creates memories that will be talked about for the whole year. But, as a corporate magician, I’ve noticed a handful of elements at the party can separate the home runs from the rest.

Cocktail Hour Magic

When performing an after dinner show for holiday party entertainment I always perform close up magic during cocktail hour. Not only do some of the most astonishing and exciting moments happen when the staff and clients are just inches from the magic, but, most importantly, it gives them a VIP experience. For those minutes, a private show, just for a small group really takes the level of attention on the quality of their evening to the next level. Also, and this is no small thing, when I perform for the whole group later in the evening most have met and interreacted with me. Now, instead of stranger commanding their attention, a new friend is performing. It really changes the dynamic of the whole night.

Top Notch Magic First

While some performers incorporate a ‘holiday message’ into their show for the season, in my experience it’s a mistake. It always feel forced and lacks any authenticity. When I was a teenager I was asked to do this kind of thing for a local banquet. In need of experience, I said yes. I learned that night it’s simply not good. My goal is an exciting, astonishing, and memorable performance. Magic performance, especially the sleight of hand I’m interested in, takes a long time to perfect. Tossing something into the show to feel relevant is never polished and tight as the rest of the show. So I eschew any seasons greetings magic.

See and Hear

If there is a holiday party show the guests have to see and hear. It sounds simple but you’d be surprised how many times this is forgotten. Depending on the size of the crowd a microphone may be necessary for any toasts given and the performance. For audiences over 100 it’s always best to have a raised area for the performance so even the people in the back can see well.

The company holiday party is really a way to celebrate the team and create a night of fun memories. I’ve noticed people are ready to have a good time and it makes for excited and engaged audiences, which is just another reason why I love to share my magic.
